MARR AWARDED HEAVY LIFT CONTRACT ON SYDNEY METRO CENTRAL STATION

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Marr Contracting Pty Ltd (The Men from Marr’s) has been awarded the heavy lift contract on construction of another Sydney Metro station redevelopment at Central Station.

The Men from Marr’s was approached by Laing O’Rourke, who Is delivering the new Central Station Metro, to provide a craneage solution to meet lifting requirements for both above and below ground works on the AU$955 million project.

As Australia’s busiest railway station, Central Station currently supports an estimated 270,000 passengers every day, with daily capacity demands expected to grow to more 450,000 passengers over the next 20 years.

Over the next 12 months, The Men from Marr’s will assist in the construction of new metro platforms under Central Station, as well as the new landmark Central Walk pedestrian concourse.

The Men from Marr’s was originally contracted by Laing O’Rourke in 2017 on construction of the Sydney Yard Access Bridge to facilitate heavy vehicle access to Central Station as part of the first early and enabling works package for the Sydney Metro City and Southwest projects. After seeing how one of Marr’s M2480D Heavy Lift Luffing (HLL) cranes contributed to the success of that project in terms of performance and efficiency, Laing O’Rourke was keen to explore how a similar heavy lift crane solution could be adopted on construction of the new Central Station Metro.

Using one of Marr’s M1680D Heavy Lift Luffers, the bespoke craneage solution addresses the challenge of how to provide the heavy lifting capacity the project needs, but within a small space to ensure minimal disruption to daily train and pedestrian traffic.

Highlighting the efficiency of the solution in terms of both lift capacity and radius, Managing Director, Simon Marr, said, “Laing O’Rourke needed a solution that allowed the team to adopt a new method of modularised construction in a confined, live rail environment. The M1680D not only met the criteria to complete the heavy lifting requirements demanded of the construction methodology and program, but also the lighter lifts associated with general construction activities. Our solution also eliminated the need to use a range of different sized cranes to meet the varied scope of lifting requirements, which would have presented a whole new set of challenges in such a confined space.”

The Central Station Metro upgrade is expected to be completed in 2022.
