SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Marr Contracting Pty Ltd (The Men From Marr’s), have commenced work on the construction of an additional two new Sydney Metro stations at Barangaroo and Martin Place.
Working with John Holland CPB Ghella (JHCPBG) joint venture, The Men From Marr’s are revolutionising the way that metro train stations are being built by offering a safer, more efficient craneage solution that reduces onsite lifting requirements and helps ensure the construction program stays on track.
Marr’s were initially contracted to deliver heavy lifting craneage services to the Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) consortium – comprising John Holland, CPB Contractors and UGL Rail – on construction of the Castle Hill Station in 2016.
After the successful completion of that project in October 2018, JHCPBG saw the benefit of adopting the same technology using Marr’s M2480D Heavy Lift Luffers on the construction of additional stations on the Sydney Metro City stage of what is Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure project.
“A number of similar mega transport projects around the world are adopting the same cut-and-cover box method as JHCPBG has applied to the construction of these Sydney Metro stations. But the big difference is that by installing the right tower cranes we’ve been able to use one type of crane to complete all the heavy lifting requirements of the project, and with the ability to lift bigger pieces we’ve also been able to reduce the number of lifts and take a number of elements off critical path,” said Marr’s Managing Director, Simon Marr.
As an example, part of the craneage solution for Barangaroo Station will involve the M2480D extracting a 270-tonne Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) on completion of the tunnelling works before being reconfigured to work on construction of the station.
The craneage solution developed by Marr is not only driving productivity, reducing time and the overall project cost; but also improving safety with fewer, onsite lifting activities.
